Upcoming road projects on S.R. 23 in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A number of road construction projects will impact S.R. 23 in South Bend beginning Wednesday, June 2.

Fellows Street to Jefferson Boulevard

S.R. 23 will be closed from Fellows Street to the south side of Jefferson Boulevard for a road widening project beginning on or after June 2.

The ramps at S.R. 23 and Lincolnway/S.R. 933 and at S.R. 23 and Mishawaka will be closed during construction.

The official detour route for this project will follow Michigan Street/U.S. 30, U.S. 20, and Bremen Highway/N. Main Street. Traffic going northeast on S.R.23 can take the right lane and continue on Sample Street before a hard road closure before the ramps at Lincolnway.

Some access to local businesses will be maintained.

Traffic will be able to access the S.R. 23 ramp to downtown South Bend.

Michigan Street to South Bend Avenue

A resurfacing and preventative maintenance project will begin on S.R. 23 between Michigan Street and South Bend Avenue on or after June 2.

This project will have alternating lane closures, with one lane staying open in each direction.

Intersection of S.R. 23 and S. Main Street

The intersection improvement project to widen the road and add turn lanes at S.R. 23 and S. Main Street, originally scheduled to begin May 25, has been delayed. Work is expected to begin in the next couple of weeks.

At least one lane will stay open in each direction on S.R. 23. Drivers won’t be able to turn left onto Main Street if going northeast on S.R. 23.

All three projects are expected to continue through late-August, 2021.

Drivers are asked to please stay alert in these work areas and follow traffic directions carefully. Please allow extra time when driving. Drive slow and distraction-free through construction zones.
