UPDATE: Local BMX star breathing on his own after serious fall

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend BMX star Brett Banasiewicz was taken off a ventilator on Wednesday.

Last week, the South Bend teen fell eight-feet and fell on his head during a practice run.

He was in a medically-induced coma at a Virginia hospital.

Brett's mom, Lisa posted an update on Facebook that said:

"Brett is now breathing completely on his own. He continues to open his eyes briefly, but is not yet awake and conscious. Keep the prayers coming."
