Updates from School City of Mishawaka

School City of Mishawaka provided an update regarding changes to the calendar and free meals for students because of school closures due to COVID-19.

On Monday, a letter was sent to staff and school families regarding the following changes.

MEAL SERVICE CHANGES

In light of Governor Holcomb’s announcement of a ‘Stay-At-Home’ order today, we remain committed to serving students and families. An important note is that SCM will continue offering lunch and breakfast for the next morning to anyone 18 years of age and under Monday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  However, we will be changing site locations to only Beiger, Emmons, LaSalle, and John Young Middle School beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

REMOTE LEARNING DAYS

On Friday, March 20, 2020, the Indiana Department of Education provided additional guidance clarifying waiver days. Due to Governor Holcomb’s executive order to close all Indiana Schools until May 1, 2020, days missed between March 20, 2020 - May 1, 2020 will NOT count as part of the original 20-day waiver. As such, SCM chose to continue an altered schedule of two Remote Learning Days a week to support continued learning while balancing the additional pressures on our students, families, and staff during this time. This plan also ensures that we will not have to extend our school year.

We are preparing for students to return to school on Monday, May 4, 2020. With the Indiana elections being rescheduled to June 2, 2020, we will now plan on having school on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. This will make our last student day Friday, May 29, 2020 instead of Monday, June 1, 2020.

SCHOOL EVENTS

There are many school events that have been postponed or canceled. We will not speculate what will happen with all events, but we are committed to seeing our seniors graduate. While we cannot say what date for certain, we will have a graduation ceremony just like we have for the past 142 years. We are awaiting further guidance from the Indiana Department of Education for how we are to handle requirements for graduation, advanced placement (AP) tests, dual-credit certification, etc. We can tell you that we expect flexibility in that guidance and will work with our students in the best ways that we can.
