US20 reopens after fatal accident, victim identified

A fatal accident closed one eastbound and one westbound lane of US20 at US35 Monday morning.
The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. CST at US20 and US35.
The LaPorte County Sheriff says Javier Florez of Michigan City pulled out in front of an oncoming semi on US20.
The semi was driven by 79-year-old Ivan Hickmott of Watervliet Michigan.
Both vehicles crossed the median and landed against a guard rail in the westbound lanes.
The collision caused a large steel coil to break free from the trailer and crews are working to recover and remove the coil.
The driver of the passenger vehicle died on scene. The driver has not been identified.
