USDA issues new lunch standards for schools

Fruits and vegetables are about to be a staple in your child's school lunchroom.

The USDA issued new standards for meal programs in public and private schools. Schools will now have to offer more whole grains and produce, as well as fat free and low fat milk.

Kids aren't going to be forced to take the healthier foods, however, the new rules are part of an effort to help curb childhood obesity.

The new standards go into effect July 1st and will be phased-in over three years.
