USPS extends hours to deal with holiday rush

Post offices are extending their hours this holiday season, all to help their customers get their packages out on time this year.

Sunday, December 14th and Sunday, December 21st these select branches will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.:

  • South Bend Main Office
  • Edison Park
  • Elkhart
  • Mishawaka
  • Chippewa
  • Marion
  • Kokomo
The postal service also rented extra vehicles to handle increased volumes of packages over the holiday, and they will also be out on Sunday.

The postal service also says they are making more than one delivery a day in some areas.

Monday, December 15th is expected to be the United States Postal Service's busiest day of the year, with more than 640 million cards, letters, and packages expected to be processed. That is up from the 607 million pieces of mail delivered on the same day in 2013.

The post office says they're ready, working seven days a week in larger cities.

If you want to avoid the rush, the postal service suggests that you wait until Tuesday, or take advantage of their Sunday hours.
