UTV crash leaves 13-year-old dead, 6-year-old in critical condition

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. -- The LaGrange County Sheriff's Officer reports deputies responded to the area of 3500 W. S.R. 120 around 11:34 a.m., Thursday, for a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a UTV/off-road vehicle.
Investigators determined a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 32-year-old Coldwater, Mich. man, was traveling east on S.R. 120 when a John Deere UTV attempted to cross the road at a 90-degree angle traveling south.
The driver stated he was unable to avoid a collision and both occupants on the UTV were ejected.
The UTV was operated by a 13-year-old Karson W. Hochstetler, with a passenger identified as 6-year-old Merle Herschberger.
First responders attempted live saving measures at the scene, but Hochstetler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Herschberger was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in critical condition with unknown internal injuries.
The Jeep driver was uninjured in the crash.
