Vacant house fire 1 of 3 blazes crews put out overnight

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend fire crews were busy battling 3 different blazes overnight on Tuesday, the last of which was a vacant home.

It happened around 1:45a.m. on the 700 block of Lincolnway East in between the Edgewater and Monroe Park neighborhoods.

Crews, who fought another fire a few weeks back at the house right next door, believe the blazes began in the back of the home.

Neighbors say the vacant houses in their community have become hideouts for squatters as of late.

"I don't know what anybody can do about it," said nearby home owner Eric Ford. "People are sneaking in the middle of the night all the time. Unless you have a guard, then I don't know what can be done."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
