Two injured when vehicle crashes into home and sparks fire in Cass County

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- Two people were injured when a car crashed into a home in the 1300 block of Barron Lake Road early Monday morning, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Around 7:30 a.m., a 33-year-old man was driving south on Barron Lake Road when his vehicle rear ended a vehicle driven by a 53-year-old, who was also traveling south.

The 33-year-old's vehicle then ran off the roadway, hit a mailbox, then the side of a home, deputies said.

The car struck a gas line on the side of the house, causing the house and vehicle to catch fire.

One person was inside the home at the time of the crash, but but was not injured.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the house got out of the vehicle before it caught fire, but did suffer injuries. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The driver that was rear ended went to the hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation.

Michigan State Police, Howard Township Fire Department, Edwardsburg Fire Department, Buchanan Township Fire Department, Niles City Fire Department, Niles Township Fire Department, Pokagon Township Fire Department, Dowagiac Fire Department, Indian Lake Fire Department, Clay Fire Department, and SMCAS Ambulance assisted at the scene.
