Vehicle on US 20 strikes 2 parked vehicles in construction zone

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A vehicle on US 20 entered a construction zone, struck a vehicle, lost its tire, which struck a third vehicle, then crossed two lanes of traffic before coming to a rest, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to US 20 just west of SR 19 Friday just before 11 a.m. for a crash involving three vehicles.

The investigation showed the driver was traveling eastbound on US 20, just west of SR 19, when his vehicle drove left of the center line into a construction zone.

His Chevy Avalanche rear ended a Kenworth truck, which was parked west of SR 19. When the two vehicles collided, one of the tires of the Avalanche was ripped from its axel and flew into the rear of a Dodge Dakota, also parked west of SR 19, deputies said.

The Avalanche continued eastbound through a construction zone and sideswiped the median, then crossed both lanes of travel back to the other side of the roadway and came to a stop, deputies said.

It traveled approximately 100 feet, deputies said.

The driver suffered a possible broken arm and was transported to the hospital.
