Victim loses eye in domestic violence incident, SWAT team assist in suspect's arrest

Michael Layton

LA PORTE, Ind. -- The La Porte Police Department announced it's investigating a domestic violence incident involving a violation of a court-issued protection order.

Police say on Jan. 18, officers responded to a protection order violation involving a woman and her ex-boyfriend, 32-year-old Michael Layton.

Responding officers confirmed there was an active no-contact order against Layton stemming from a previous domestic battery and strangulation arrest.

Police say the victim sustained severe injuries requiring treatment at several hospitals.

On Jan. 22, the report states a detective conducted another interview with the victim, during which it was learned her injuries led to the surgical removal of her eye.

The victim told investigators after she'd been assaulted by Layton, he confined her to their apartment for about two weeks before she escaped to receive medical care.

Authorities also learned Layton was actively packing the apartment with the alleged intent of fleeing the state.

Police say due to the severe allegations and risk factors involved, a search warrant was obtained and the La Porte Police SWAT was activated to help take Layton into custody.

The warrant was executed and Layton was taken into custody without incident.
