Volunteers needed to help flood victims

Volunteers are needed to help local residents who suffered damage from the flood waters earlier this month.

More than 950 homes were damaged and approximately 100 of those suffered major damage or were destroyed, according to the Salvation Army.

Volunteers are needed to help clean up debris, carry out soaked drywall, cabinets and furniture and offer assistance to crews who are visiting from other parts of the state.

In many cases the crews are tearing out the walls down to the studs and then treating for mold. Local emergency officials say volunteers will be needed for the next 18 months to help with the repair and rebuilding.

If you would like to help, go to http://www.mykroc.org/ and follow the link to be registered in a volunteer database.

You must be at least 16 years old and be willing to get dirty and work hard.

You can also donate on line, or text to give by texting the word – flooding - to 91999. All of the donations will go directly to help local flood victims.

Free clean up kits are available at the Kroc Center’s Family Resource Center, 900 W. Western Avenue in South Bend.
