Warsaw man in very critical condition following motorcycle crash with deer

WARSAW, Ind. -- A Warsaw man is in critical condition in a Fort Wayne hospital after a motorcycle crash involving a deer.

Emergency personnel responded to a 9-1-1 call early Wednesday morning of a motorcycle crash near the intersection of Roy and Jean Street in Winona Lake.

When they arrived, officers found 34-year-old Robert L. Gast lying in the road with severe head injuries.

Police also found his blue, 1978 BMW motorcycle tipped over in the road, along with a dead deer.

Gast was airlifted to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne.  He is currently listed in very critical condition.

The Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. Team investigators say that Gast was traveling west on Roy Street when a deer apparently ran into the path of his motorcycle, causing it to overturn and throw him from the bike onto the pavement.

Gast was found unconscious. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. Team investigators stated that the crash is still under investigation, pending drug and alcohol lab results.

The Winona Lake Police and Fire Departments, Multi-Township E.M.S., Warsaw Police, and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene.
