Deadly Toll Road crash shuts down westbound lanes near Notre Dame exit

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - One woman died in a crash that shut down the westbound lanes of the Toll Road near mile marker 79.6 Tuesday.

Just before 11:12 a.m., a 2016 Kenworth towing double trailers was traveling west when the brakes on the back trailer locked up.

The semi came to a stop with the back trailer mostly in the right lane.

A Toyota traveling west in the right lane tried to swerve out of the way but struck the semi with its right side.

A female in the front passenger seat died at the scene.

Both the driver of the Toyota and driver of the semi were not injured.

State troopers are investigating why the semi's brakes locked.

Westbound lanes reopened at 2:50 p.m.
