Light rain this morning doesn’t last all day long
GRANGER, Ind. - Normally around this time of year, workers are busy salting and clearing roads.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) shares the list of tasks to keep workers busy when there are no roads to clear.
When conditions are clear, plow drivers double as maintenance laborers like fixing potholes and guardrails.
The city of South Bend tells me they don't hire seasonal winter weather employees.
They have full-time employees who perform other jobs when not plowing snow.
Even though this winter may be predicted to be milder, Cassandra Bajek with INDOT, says people should still be vigilant especially while driving.
“They need to slow down when it is snowing, those little flurries here and there may not seem like a big deal, but then end up actually causing crashes, so that's kind of what we're looking at for this winter, hoping people still stay vigilant even though it's not going to be a super busy winter, not projected to be so far," said Bajek.
I also reached out to the Berrien County Road Department.
They say that while maintenance staff isn't doing storm response, they are also patching pot holes, addressing downed trees, and maintaining snow equipment for next year.
