Whirlpool to lay off Benton Harbor employees

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Whirlpool's communications director confirmed to ABC57 that some employees involved in engineering products are being let go.

Whirlpool confirmed less than 25 employees in Benton Harbor will be laid off due to their department moving to the business side.

The Whirlpool Corporation released the following statement:

"Whirlpool Corporation announced another step in the company's evolution. To meet the dynamic needs of our consumers, we are integrating our global product development and engineering teams directly into our company's business units of North America, Latin America, Asia and KitchenAid Small Appliances. This will provide our business units with greater autonomy and decision-making to unlock faster market responsiveness, consumer-focused product development and critical innovation. With this shift, less than 25 global roles located in Benton Harbor will be impacted. These individuals will be provided with comprehensive transition benefits, including severance. Whirlpool Corporation continues to have approximately 44,000 employees around the world."
