Winamac police chase reaches speeds in excess of 150 mph

WINAMAC, Ind. -- The Winamac Police Department reports an officer on routine patrol near Monticello Street and Ontario Street on Sept. 8, when he observed a vehicle traveling 57 mph in a posted 30 mph zone.
The officer then activated his emergency lights and attempted to catch up to the vehicle to attempt a traffic stop.
The suspect vehicle, later identified as a 2006 Ford Mustang modified and equipped with a supercharger, fled from the officer.
Authorities noted the suspect vehicle disregarded several stop signs during the pursuit.
The chase continued into the Braun parking lot before exiting and speeding west onto 11th Street.
Police say the Mustang continued at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles traveling west into eastbound traffic.
The Mustang drove off the roadway to avoid a collision with oncoming traffic.
The pursuing officer noted the Mustang was traveling in excess of 150 mph west on S.R. 14.
At this point, the officer made the decision to terminate the pursuit due to the increased risk to the public due to the suspect's driving behavior.
Later that day, the Mustang was found in Miami County where the driver was incarcerated for narcotics related charges.
A cell phone was also obtained by the pursuing officer for evidence relating to this case of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, and numerous infractions, pending a search warrant.
The investigation is ongoing.
