Woman and dogs rescued from Wednesday morning fire

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department reports crews responded to a house fire around 5:30 a.m., Wednesday, in the 1100 block of Johnson Street.

Firefighters arrived to find a working fire extending from the first floor to the second.

While fighting the fire, crews found a woman leaning out of a first-floor window at the home's rear.

Firefighters retrieved the woman from the home, and she was subsequently taken to Memorial Hospital.

Fire officials say her condition is currently unknown, but she was alert and conscious when she was rescued.

Crews also saved two dogs from the home and fire officials say they appeared to be uninjured.

The report states the fire was under control in 20 minutes.

Fire officials say no other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
