Wallingford, CT -- An investigation is underway in Wallingford after a woman was killed and a man was injured after they were hit by an Amtrak train on Tuesday night.

Amtrak officials said at a little after 8 p.m., train #494 hit the two people who were trespassing on the tracks. The train was heading north.

Police were seen investigating in the area of Old Colony Road near Oak Street.

Investigators said the woman was 24 years old and was thrown from impact to the west side of the tracks. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The 29-year-old man was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with a severely fractured hand.

It is unclear why the couple was on the tracks but police said this appears to have been nothing more than a tragic accident.

There were 33 passengers on the train. No passengers or crew members were injured. The train was a Northeast Regional train that operates between New Haven and Springfield.

Tracks in the area had been on hold for about an hour as of 9:15 p.m.
