Workers wanted: Michigan farming industry ripe for the picking

MICHIGAN -- Looking for a job? One area ripe for picking is the Michigan farming industry!

Farmers said they are in desperate need of workers!

Agriculture is expected to grow by 19-percent in the coming years.

The problem is aging farmers. It seems that the younger generation is not interested in following in their footsteps.

"We're in desperate need for younger farmers to take over this land. We had crops, such as apples and asparagus that went unpicked this season. We're in need of veterinarians, accountants, marketing, and sales. There's a wide range of jobs,” said Michael Deruiter, a farmer.

The average age of a U.S. farmer is 57-years-old.

Over the next couple of years, 75-percent of Michigan farms will change owners.
