Wrong-way driver arrested following pursuit

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A wrong-way driver was arrested after allegedly leading police on a chase, according to the South Bend Police Department.

Trevonn Austin, 28, was arrested on the following charges:

  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license
  • Felon in possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a controlled substance

Just after 11 p.m. on Sunday, a South Bend Police officer saw a vehicle travel the wrong way near the Cooper Bridge.

When the officer tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver allegedly didn't stop and led police on a short pursuit.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop shortly after hitting stop sticks in the area of Chapin and Washington streets.

The driver, identified as Austin, ran from the vehicle but was quickly caught by police, reports said.

Austin was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.
