Peak fall color in Michiana will be in full force later this week

NOW: Peak fall color in Michiana will be in full force later this week

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Unseasonably warm temperatures across Michiana this October have pushed peak fall foliage back. Leaf-seekers can now expect the most vibrant colors to peak around Halloween weekend and linger into the first week of November.

According to official data from the National Weather Service, South Bend has experienced a very mild fall to date. Since the start of September, temperatures are nearly 5 degrees warmer than what's typical.

So far this month, the city has had three days with temperatures reaching 80 degrees or higher, and 16 days reaching 70 degrees or higher.

Normally, daily highs in South Bend during mid- to late October range from the mid- to low 60s before cooling into the upper 50s by the end of the month. Temperatures have fallen to or below seasonal averages only four days out of 25.

The prolonged period of above-average warmth has slowed the natural processes that trigger leaves to change color, pushing the peak viewing window later into the season — a trend seen in recent years that persists in 2026.
