14 state parks to close for deer reductions

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has announced the dates 14 state parks will close for controlled deer reduction.

The temporary closings are scheduled for November 16 and 17 and November 30 and December 1.

The parks that will close include:

  • Clifty Falls
  • Fort Harrison
  • Harmonie
  • Lincoln
  • McCormick’s Creek
  • Ouabache
  • Pokagon
  • Potato Creek
  • Prophetstown
  • Shades
  • Shakamak
  • Tippecanoe
  • Turkey Run
  • Whitewater Memorial

Only individual hunters drawn last September and those hunters they listed on their applications may participate in the hunts. There will be no standby drawings this year.

The parks selected for deer reductions are determined based on habitat recovery and previous harvest rates.

Indiana's parks are home to more than 32-state endangered plants natural communities, according to the DNR. The deer reduction maintains he habitat throughout the state parks for all plants and animals.
