19-year-old woman dies after incident on Long Lake

CASS COUNTY, Mich.—A 19-year-old Shipshewana woman has died following an incident on Long Lake that occurred on August 13, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were sent to Long Lake in Porter Township on August 13 around 7:30 p.m. to investigate a swimming accident.

On scene, deputies learned that seven individuals from Indiana were wake boarding when they stopped for a break.

While they were stopped, one of the passengers, Janelle Miller, 19, of Shipshewana, left the boat to swim.

Shortly after she went into the water, other passengers in the boat could not find her and called 911.

Passengers dove into the water to try to find her but were unsuccessful.

Just before 11 p.m., a dive team located Miller’s body.

According to the sheriff’s office, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
