ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A 20-year-old Elkhart County man is facing several charges after allegedly strangling a woman at the Love's Travel Stop on C.R. 17 in the early hours of Sept. 5.

The suspect, Alan Patino, is charged with Strangulation, a Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony, Auto Theft, a Level 6 Felony, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, a Misdemeanor, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident, a Misdemeanor.

Patino's initial court hearing is Thursday.

According to the probable cause affidavit, an officer with the Elkhart Police Department responded to the Love's Travel Stop around 3:25 a.m., regarding a physical domestic incident.

Dispatch notes showed the suspect as Patino, and that he was armed with a gun.

Patino was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck in circles around the parking lot when police arrived.

Upon arrival, the EPD officer noted Patino was driving in his direction. At this point the officer activated his emergency lights and unholstered his gun while giving a loud verbal command for Patino to stop.

Patino failed to stop and drove away at a high speed.

A pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of up to 110 mph.

Police say Patino drove through several yards, hit several mailboxes, and damaged an AEP utility poll during the chase.

The pursuit ended when Patino spun out and the Ram became stuck in a ditch.

Patino was arrested without incident. Police spoke to the victim and two witnesses back at Love's.

The three women, one of whom was Patino's girlfriend, stated they had been at a party that evening without Patino when they noticed his phone's location was at the cul de sac on Loves Drive for an hour.

The three women then drive to Patino's location to check on him, at which point they told police Patino was found to be in the truck with a naked woman.

When the three confronted Patino, he allegedly slammed his girlfriend's friend against the truck and choked her for at least 10 seconds. Patino's girlfriend said she tried to help the victim by getting Patino off her.

Police observed and photographed red marks on the victim's neck and right arm/shoulder area.

Patino's girlfriend told police she thought he was trying to find his gun to shoot them or their car. Patino also allegedly tried to cause a rear-end collision with the trio's car.

Police learned Patino never received a driver's license and that he didn't have permission to use the Ram, which was a company truck owned by ADVX Capital DBA Spray Foam Genie of South Bend.
