30-year-old man charged with felonies after allegedly stealing a man's truck and dog
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Court documents state 30-year-old Kevin Ray Bergland has been charged with burglary, residential entry, auto theft, and theft after allegedly stealing an acquaintance's truck and pet dog around February 4.
Documents state on or about February 4, the Mishawaka Police responded to a report of a home burglary.
The homeowner, Curtis Skinner, confirmed with the police that he allowed Bergland to stay at the home the previous night.
Skinner told police he offered to take Bergland to a homeless shelter, but that he refused to leave, at which point Skinner called the police.
Bergland left prior to the police arriving.
Skinner later told police he noticed Bergland in the area around 11 a.m. while running errands.
Skinner returned home around 6:30 p.m. and noticed his truck and dog were missing. Skinner told police he'd left the truck keys inside his home on a counter.
Skinner stated that when he left, his truck and home were unlocked, and the truck had a garage door opener in it.
Skinner said he arrived home with his door locked and the lights off, neither of which was the case when he left.
On February 6, members of the St. Joseph County Police responded to a report of an unwanted guest.
Upon police arrival, they encountered Bergland in the stolen truck owned by Skinner. The truck was running, and the dog was located inside the truck.
Bergland is charged with burglary, a level four felony, residential entry, a level six felony, auto theft, a level six felony, and two counts of theft, a class A misdemeanor.
