4-Time Stanley Cup winner Lidstrom retires from Detroit Red Wings

One of the best careers in NHL history has come to an end.

"My drive and motivation are not where to need to be to play at this level," said Nicklas Lidstrom. "Retiring today allows me to walk away from the game with pride, rather than having the game walk away from me."

On Thursday, Detroit Red Wings Captain Nicklas Lidstrom announced his retirement.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion fought back tears as he made the announcement.

Lidstrom is considered to be one of the best defenseman to ever play the game.

The 42-year-old Swede played with the Red Wings for 20 seasons.
