64-year-old sustains head injury while 49-year-old suffers broken hips following two-vehicle crash

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports officers responded to the intersection of W. Bristol Street and N. Michigan Street for a two-vehicle crash with injuries and entrapment around 2:45 p.m. on Friday, August 9.

Police say the initial investigation indicates a Dodge Journey SUV, driven by a 20-year-old man, unnamed in the report, was traveling east on W. Bristol Street and struck a Mazda 626, driven by 64-year-old man, also unnamed, attempting to make a southbound turn onto N. Michigan Street while heading west on Bristol Street.

The report states medics soon arrived and began treating all involved.

The 64-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with a head injury, chest pains, and difficulty breathing.

The Mazda also had three passengers, including a 49-year-old woman, who was trapped in the vehicle, extricated, and taken to the hospital for broken hips and lacerations.

Another passenger, an 18-year-old man, had complaints of chest pain, while the third passenger, a 33-year-old man, had complaints of overall pain.

The 20-year-old Journey driver did not have any complaint of pain and refused medical treatment.

The Elkhart Police Department Crash Team is currently investigating the crash.
