8-year-old accused of taking family SUV, leading police on brief pursuit

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Goshen Police arrested an 8-year-old from New Paris who allegedly took his parents' SUV without their permission and led police on a short pursuit through downtown.

Tuesday evening, police received reports of a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed with a driver that appeared very young as it entered the city limits on SR 15.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver did not stop.

The juvenile drove to Main Street, pushed through the barricades at Main and Pike, then stopped in the 300 block of N. Main Street. The entire pursuit lasted only a few minutes, police said.

The 8-year-old was arrested for resisting arrest with a vehicle and operating a vehicle without a license.

He was released to his parents.

Police said the juvenile took the vehicle without his parents' knowledge or consent.
