New Buffalo Waterfront Safety and Lifeguard Supervisor, Gavin Ales, says he has seen the effects of the smoke firsthand.
“We’ve definitely had people leaving throughout the day, and It usually would be busier out here at this time, but it seems right now is the worst it’s been today,” Ales said. “If I wasn’t at work, I certainly wouldn’t be outside.”
Ales also said that he had to send one of his employees home as a direct result of the poor air quality.
Along with the beach seeing effects of the poor air quality, local restaurants are as well: the Stray Dog Bar and Grill shut down their rooftop patio, until conditions begin to clear.
The main message from both vacationers and residents in the area, was that they hope the smoke can clear before the weekend, so they can enjoy some time at the beach without feeling like they are taking a risk every time they step outside.
