9-year-old girl dies after bad fall on family's farm

A 9-year-old girl died Tuesday after police say she fell from a gate on her family’s farm.

Around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, police and first responders were dispatched to a residence in the 10000 block of Martindale Road in southeastern St. Joseph County, Indiana.

Police say the call was about a 9-year-old girl who had been found unresponsive and not breathing.

When they arrived, police say family members were attempting to resuscitate the girl.

Resuscitation efforts by both family members and first responders were unsuccessful and 9-year-old Chelsie Hill was pronounced dead at the scene.

St. Joseph County Police and the St. Joseph County Coroner conducted an investigation at the scene.

Preliminary information suggests that Hill was trying to cross a gate on the family farm when the gate fell over, causing Hill to fall awkwardly.

Police say Hill was found some time later by an older brother, but say she was unconscious.

A final determination regarding the cause of death will be rendered by the Coroner’s Office after a medical examination is completed and the results evaluated.
