'Dad Strong 5k' event advocates for men's mental and physical health

Present Pillars

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Members of the Benton Harbor community are advocating for men's health this Father's Day weekend with a 'Dad Strong 5k'.

This free event supports the importance of good physical and mental health for all men just before Father's Day.

The 5k was funded by Present Pillars, a Benton Harbor nonprofit that helps men and fathers learn how to build a strong foundation for personal growth.

There was music, games, and vendors ready for the racers when they hit the finish line.

"There's a stigma amongst men's culture of not going to the doctor, not seeking help when the first signs, you know, tough it out and just struggle through it, and that has caused a lot of us to lose our fathers early and have lasting issues with our own health," said Dane Rasmussen a volunteer with Present Pillars.

Rasmussen goes on to say, we all have dads, and we want dads, brothers, uncles, cousins, and all the men in our life to get regular screenings, see their doctor, and take care of their health in all ways."

Present Pillars is trying to raise $10,000 to provide fitness opportunities and incentives that encourage men to prioritize their health.
