ELKHART, Ind. -- On Tuesday, around 9:53 p.m., the Elkhart Fire Department responded to the 1200 block of Canton Street for a reported house fire.

When crews arrived at the scene, smoke was coming from the front door. Upon entry crews spotted the fire on the first floor living room. The fire was under control within 20 minutes.

A woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while her three pets, two cats and a dog, made it out safely.

Fire officials say the cause appears to have been accidental from a cigarette butt.
