Local police preparing for Notre Dame/Miami football game by ramping up security
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- With Notre Dame expecting to see record high foot traffic on campus for gameday weekend, police prepare to have additional safety measures in place.
Notre Dame football is facing undefeated Miami in what's considered one of the most anticipated games in college football this season. South Bend is preparing for a large number of tourists to come into town, and police say there will be heightened security.
"We're going to have additional staffing in our real-time crime center coordinating with staffing with Notre Dame PD," South Bend Police Captain Kyle Dombrowski says.
"We'll have additional officers from our afternoon shift and patrol shift, but also additional staffing from our strategic focus unit and other officers from other jurisdictions who are going to be assisting pretty much all day for the game."
Captain Dombrowski also says they will be utilizing surveillance cameras and drones.
In a Notre Dame press conference, Michael Seamon, the Vice President of University operations, events and safety says they're expecting "Anywhere from 130,000 to 150,000 people coming to campus."
University officials are also taking steps to manage the crowds. Fences have been placed near Angela Boulevard and Eddy Street to direct people towards roadways and sidewalks rather than cutting cross the grass.
Kickoff between Notre Dame and Miami is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
