FREEMAN’S FOCUS: Staying sharp and ready for Syracuse

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Head Coach Marcus Freeman wants one thing heading into Saturday’s game against Syracuse — discipline and focus.

Lately, he’s been especially proud of his defense and special teams. Notre Dame is allowing just 18.4 points per game, one of the best marks in the country. But to stay locked in, Freeman says the team has been tracking something called “MAs” all week — short for missed assignments or mental errors. He says physical mistakes happen, but mental ones are not acceptable.

Turnovers and situational football have been the biggest priorities in practice this week. Freeman wants his team to be smarter in high-pressure moments — focusing on gritty yards, pass protection, and angles.

Special teams also earned praise, especially the kickoff return unit, but Freeman said they must clean up any chances opponents have for big returns. His message: win each moment, and remember it’s about the team, not individual glory.

Freeman expects Syracuse to challenge Notre Dame’s run game, so fresh formations and a stronger passing attack will be key.

At this point in the season, every opponent is going to show up at their best — because nothing would be bigger than knocking Notre Dame out of the playoff conversation.
