Governors Whitmer and Braun order flags at half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day Thursday

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Governor Mike Braun have ordered U.S. flags and Michigan and Indiana flags, respectively, at the state capitols and at public buildings and grounds across the states to be lowered at half-staff on Thursday in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

"Today, we honor the brave officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to our state,” said Governor Whitmer. “These men and women in uniform step up every day to protect their communities, risking their own safety to protect ours. As we reflect on their sacrifices, let’s honor their memories and recommit to supporting their families and fellow first responders.”

The day falls within National Police Week, which was recognized in Congress in 1962 to recognize law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Michigan and Indiana residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are also encouraged to display the flags at half-staff.

Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in Indiana and Michigan and returned to full staff on Friday.
