New rule in Elkhart to make disposal of big items easier

ELKHART. Ind. -- A new trash rule in the City of Elkhart is making it easier for people to get rid of big items.

 Residents don't have to go through the hassle of calling when they have large items, they can simply put them on the curb.

But there are limits. 

You can only put out two large items at a time.

This new rule is part of Borden Waste creating a stronger relationship with the city.

They say simply sitting waste at the curb boosts efficiency for families, so they no longer have to schedule a pickup.

Municipal sales manager eric ivory explains what they can pick up. 

"We say large items and white goods." Ivory clarifies, "So, if you think about a large item, it would be anything that traditionally wouldn't fit into the 96-gallon container. So were talking about maybe carpeting, some padding that sort of stuff. Long as it's bundled, we'll come by and pick it up. Like dressers, larger chairs, mattresses, those sorts of things are the large items. Then when we talk about white goods like any refrigerators, washer and dryer, so long as some of the freon has been removed." 

Ivory wants you to know that although large items can be sat on the curb, you should only do so on your designated trash day. That way the city can maintain a clean look, and trash is not out all week.

He also hopes this prevents illegal dumping.
