ABC57 Live at the Indy 500: Carb Day

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Carb Day started off with a vintage car exhibition and ended with a concert. People from all over the country and the world were at the speedway.

"We've got our cots and our tent and our food. We're here for the carb, the concerts and then the race,” said Arleta Kaiser of St. Louis, Missouri.

Spectators got a chance to check out the last practice and then watch the Indy Lights Freedom 100, a 40 lap race serving as sort of an appetizer for Sunday.

For the people that live in the area, this race is more than about speeding cars.

"The people is what just makes it so special for us. You can go to the Panama City beach for spring break. When you come here in May, you know what it's all about. I mean, it's awesome,” said Joe Rush, a Speedway, Indiana, resident.

During the Carb Day practice session, all drivers exceeded 222 mph.

Will Power had the quickest time at 229.020 mph.

Helio Castroneves ran 52 laps and Juan Pablo Montoya only went around 15 times.

Takuma Sato had the fastest lap in a Honda at 228.242mph, fifth fastest in the session. While last year's Indy 500 winner, Ryan Hunter Reay, was only 31st fastest with a lap of 223.972 mph.

Brandon Pope will be live in our newscasts at the Indy 500 all weekend and the race will air on ABC57 at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
