SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Wednesday, ABC57's Jordan Tolbert and Jordan Hatfield took part in a police physical agility test with the South Bend Police Department.

The department has a prospect day coming up for applicants to complete several tasks necessary for the application process.

The South Bend Police Department hosts two prospect days a year, with one coming up on August 23rd.

Officer Mollie Anton, a training officer with the South Bend Police Department, says they have over 20 applicants right now.

According to a South Bend Police Department spokesperson, if you are currently an officer for another department, you can skip the written and some other aspects. Otherwise, they say prospect day is your only way into the department.

Captain Kathy Fulnecky is a training captain for SBPD.

"We’re very fortunate our recruitment is doing very well. We are currently looking for--always qualified applicants –we hire the most qualified applicants—but we’d like to see female applicants come out and join the prospect day," said Fulnecky.

Here are the requirements of the physical agility test, which Jordan Hatfield and Jordan Tolbert took part in today:

  • Vertical jump (minimum 13.5 in)
  • One Minute sit-up (Minimum 24)
  • 300-meter run (Max 82 seconds)
  • Push up (21 minimum)
  • 1.5-mile run (18 mins, 56 sec max)
  • Trigger pull with a non-working gun (6 in 10 sec)

If someone fails one step of this test, they can't continue but can reapply and come back for the next prospect day.

If you pass, here’s what Captain Kathy Fulnecky says comes after the agility test.

"They’ll do a written test, a panel interview, a personal interview, and if they pass all that, then they meet with the background investigator that day, and that's at least 80 percent of the hiring process in one day," said Fulnecky.
