After school program in Michigan City helping kids combine art and reading

The Lubeznik Center for the Arts is running an after school program for second and third graders in the Michigan City public schools.

The program is called Literacy of the Arts.

Abagael Schmidt, the literacy specialist who created the curriculum told us, “this curriculum uses visual art as a tool to enhance comprehension.”

Something that the Lubeznik Center realized was lacking in Michigan City students.

Janet Bloch, the Lubeznik Education Director, told us that ‘through some outside evaluations we had done we have learned that in the second and third grade level there is a drop off in literacy in our students.”

But, as they help these students better prepare for the classroom, students tell us they are having a lot of fun.

“The most thing I like in my life is art,” said Tyler Jaworaski, one of the 3rd graders in the program.
