Airport hangar catches fire in Elkhart

ELKHART, IND. -- Flames broke out at The Elkhart Municipal Airport around 1 a.m. on Monday when a hangar caught fire.

There were about a dozen fire trucks putting out the flames.  The assistant fire chief said because of the design of the building, firefighters had a lot of extra work.

They were putting out the fire for more than three hours, and had to use saws to break apart the building to put of the flames.

No one was in the hangar and no injuries were reported, however there was a plane in the hangar that received extensive heat damage.

"The fire itself is dangerous, but the heat that is generated with this type of structure can compromise the buildings structure within about forty minutes", said Shaun Edgerton.

Edgerton also said the investigators should know within the next two days what caused the fire.
