Altercation leads to shooting Saturday
Van Buren County Deputies responded to a call about an altercation between two males Saturday evening involving a gun.
The call came in at 7:48 p.m. and happened on the 62000 block of Gilmore Ave in Keeler Township.
The altercation led to a gun being fired and one of the subjects hit.
Upon arrival Deputies found that two male subjects were involved in a physical fight and one of the subjects, a 54-year-old male from Illinois was injured with a gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to the Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, Michigan and had to be later transferred to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo due to his injuries.
He is listed in stable condition.
The suspect, a 63-year-old Van Buren County resident, left the scene to another location to contact police. He told police he had no phone reception at the scene due to a storm in that area.
The suspect then called 911 and reported that he needed police assistance because “he believes he just shot a guy”.
Police responded to the call and made contact with him.
Due to visual injuries on the suspect, Police transported him to the Dowagiac Hospital for medical attention.
After he was treated, the suspect was taken into custody and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on felonious assault charges.
The Van Buren County Sheriff Office is still investigating this incident.
The Cass County Sheriff Dept, Pokagon Band Tribal Police, and Dowagiac Police Dept. assisted at the scene.
