AM General awarded $64.5 million phase contract for new vehicle

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The newest military vehicle may come from AM General.

This week, the South Bend company received a $64.5 million phase contract for its off-road "blast resistant vehicle".

AM General plans to build 22 prototypes for government testing.

The military is also looking at two other designs.

The eventual winner will make 18,500 vehicles over a five-year period.

That's starting in 2015.
