Arrest made in Benton Township homicide

Police report a 20-year-old Benton Township resident has been arrested for the murder of Kenneth Martin Jr. on Thursday.

Officers from the Benton Township Police Department say Anthony Sanders was interviewed and acknowledged his involvement in the homicide.

On Wednesday at approximately 9:19 p.m., police responded to a shooting in the 1900 Block of East Empire Avenue to find 43-year-old Kenneth Martin Jr. deceased from a gunshot wound to his chest.

Police say Martin was walking with his fiancée, Cynthia Sorrels, to the Ravines mobile home park  from a friend’s house.

According to authorities, a man later identified as Sanders, allegedly approached the couple demanding money and pointed a 12-gauge shotgun at Martin.

Sorrels says her fiancé never had time to react to Sanders’ demands before he was shot.

Officers say Sanders then fled the scene on foot.

Detectives received information during the investigation that led to Sanders’ arrest.

Sanders was lodged at the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department on charges of open murder, armed robbery, and felony possession of a firearm.
