Astronaut born in South Bend dies from cancer

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- NASA is saying goodbye to an astronaut with ties to South Bend.

Janice Voss died on Tuesday when she lost her battle with cancer.

Voss was born in South Bend.

She studied at Purdue and flew five missions, including one to the International Space Station.

NASA said Voss was one of six women to fly in space at least five times.

She was 55-years-old.
