August 13, World Organ Donation Day, brings awareness to how organ donations can save lives.

This decision was made by Kendra Durnell's family as told by Donate Life Indiana.

Kendra Durnell was 23 months old when she developed bacterial meningitis. The infection quickly spread to membranes protecting her spinal cord and brain. Nothing could be done.

In this time, Durnell's parents decided to move forward with organ donation.

It's been 22 years since the donation and Durnell's mother, Amanda, still thinks about the impact her daughter has made on other people's lives.

"I smile because Kendra's donation has helped so many people," said Amanda Durnell. "She saved the life of a 14-month-old little girl, who's now 22. Her story has educated so many others about the importance of organ donation and our choice saved lives."

Currently, more than 105,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list and 1,200 are from Indiana, according to Donate Life Indiana.

Every nine minutes another person is added to the waiting list.

Some spend years waiting, others run out of time.

Anyone can choose to be a donor regardless of age or medical history.
