Autopsy complete on 88-year-old woman killed in Stanfield Street fire

SOUTH BEND, Ind.—The autopsy has been completed on 88-year-old Phyllis Swihart, who died following a fire at her home in the 900 block of Stanfield Street on March 1.

A forensic pathologist determined her cause of death to be thermal injuries and soot inhalation.

According to the autopsy, there did not appear to be any outward trauma unrelated to the fire.

Officials with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said that the manner of death is still pending toxicology results.

The fire remains under investigation.
