Avalanche safety personnel dies in Utah avalanche

BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah — Craig Patterson, a skier whose job it was to make sure slopes are safe, died in an avalanche.

Patterson was with the Avalanche Center. An avalanche buried him while he was patrolling a peak in Utah.

The group patrols the mountains to gauge the potential for avalanches.

Patterson went alone.

The forecast at the time called for a "moderately dangerous" situation for an avalanche.
