Shooting near Ballard Elementary School leaves one injured

NILES, Mich. – A shooting near Ballard Elementary School in Niles left one man injured Tuesday afternoon, the Niles Police Department reported.

At 1:17 p.m., the Berrien County 911 Center received a call concerning a shooting near Chicago and Hillcrest Roads.

When patrol units arrived at the scene, they found a 21-year-old man who had been shot in the leg. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.

Immediately after the shooting, a vehicle was seen leaving the area westbound on Chicago Road.

Investigators believe this shooting was not random and does not pose a threat to the community.

Ballard Elementary School was on lockdown for a short time because of how close in proximity it was to the scene of the shooting.
