Bar owners against smoking ban

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- If a smoking ban passes in South Bend, bar owners in South Bend say their customers will just go across the street to bars in Mishawaka.

Tuesday night, South Bend Common Council member Gavin Ferlic proposed a smoking ban to Mishawaka council members at the Public Health and Safety Meeting.

Mishawaka council members didn't seem interested in banning smoking in bars.

Bar owners said they want the city of South Bend to drop the whole thing and support small business.

Many said they would be out of business in six months because the vast majority of their customers are smokers

The South Bend Common Council tabled the smoking ban in May and it's back on the agenda for a possible vote on July 14.
